Vacuum...

sickness slows me down...

Well, I think it is time for some new pictures. So here we go. This all might be a little disjointed, but an update nonetheless.

We do in fact have a very mobile baby these days. I think Jimmy decided it would be easier for Lucy if all her toys were in one place, and it would also slow her down a bit if they were all attached to her. So he  made her this "utility belt." A good solid amount of her toys were attached, and she wore it for at least 5 minutes. Impressed? I think so...

I have realized that things like blenders, the food processor and the vacuum are very amusing to Lucy. In fact it is often a way to get her to stop yelling, if that is the mood she is in. I am not sure if this was the case when I turned on the vacuum this day, but she was definitely amused and very curious. She climbed right up next to it and found that toward the back end a large stream of air shoots out. It is not easy to see in this picture, but it was pretty hilarious to watch. Her wispy hair danced in the breeze and she loved it! I have a video as well, but videos aren't uploading well. I will try to get it up sooner or later.

On Thursdays I take Lucy for a run on the Chessie trail. It is flat and easy to do with a stroller. Yes, I am a wimp. Regardless, as I am putting the stroller back in the car I set her on the ground to watch. I took these treasures the other day. Lucy always seems so big when I am holding her, but in these pictures she seems so small. And gosh I love her purple fleece, even though it is still too big!

And lastly, and this is the most current picture, Lucy is sick. Runny nose, nasty cough, the works. She is trying to be happy, as seen in this picture, but she is so terribly exhausted. Today she would pant and wheeze every time she would try to get up to standing. You could tell she had to work so much harder to get where she wanted to go. We are hoping for a quick recovery so we can have our energetic happy Lucy back. Either way, sick or healthy, she is still ridiculously cute.

You are so caught Lucy!

Fear

I thought that we still had a little time. But my worst fear (as of now) has come to pass. Today I walked into Lucy's room because she was making a lot of noise when she was supposed to be taking a nap and what did I see, but a little girl standing, overlooking the side of he crib. I wasn't sure if I should have laughed or cried.

I grabbed her quickly and wrapped her up in a blanket and laid her down again. She plopped her thumb in her mouth and decided she was now going to take a nap. Literally did not make another sound, and is now sleeping.

As I think about it, I am convinced as she was standing in her crib she was thinking "mom, I got myself out of my blankets. Could you come back in here and wrap me up again?!" Funny little girl. Since this week we are helping her learn to sleep more continuously through the night, I think we will wait to teach her how to cover herself in blankets. My oh my she is growing so fast.

On another note, still related to Lucy, we have decided our house is NOT baby proofed. Lucy has tested out our new living room setup and she is just too capable and curious. She stands up on EVERYTHING! We have already moved all the magazines we had out, and currently we have boxes blocking some lower shelves. It is something we need to fix ASAP. Thankfully we may still have maybe a day or two before she starts moving from room to room.

Today is Saturday

Today we suited up in preparation for a hike. It is one of my goals to do more hiking because: A)there are a lot of places to hike around here, B)it is a good Saturday activity, and C)it is good for the body and mind.

We chose a hike very close by. It ended at the saddle between two small mountains. I drive by them every time I drive to Clifton Forge.

Lucy did well, until we turned around and then she realized that she was kind of chilly. I felt bad for her feet and hands. Although they were both covered they still were not warm. But seriously isn't she awesome?!

And we managed a nice family picture at the "top." Lucy was glad to have some time out of her carrier. It wasn't terribly picturesque, but it was open and clear.

Here is proof that we got to the top.

In other news, Lucy is actually crawling now. She doesn't crawl very efficiently, but it is forward motion on her hands and knees. I thought she would skip crawling and continue rolling around the room and pulling herself up right up to the point that she would start walking. But apparently she wanted to do a little crawling too. Just give her a week and she will be cruising around like she owns the place...

In my last post I said that I had picked a half marathon, and I did pick it, but I hadn't officially signed up. Today I paid the money to run 13.1 miles. I feel good, in sense that I am committed and scared, because I haven't run a half marathon in 5-6 years. Here we go....

The race

I found a race that seems to be the one I should run. It is on a Saturday, in the vicinity of Lexington while we are still in Lexington, and I have loads of time to train.....

I think I should sign up before I talk myself out of it.

And here is the website in case you wanted to know (and so you can hold me accountable by asking me about it later):

2012

It feels pretty good to look back on my goals from the past year and find that I actually accomplished some of them.

The problem is now I must make a few more goals. I wouldn't want 2012 to be an unproductive year.

Just to recap last years goals (in no particular order):

Try 30 new recipes--check! And I kept a record which is now on my windows account which will not boot currently...total bummer, but totally unforeseen.

Go to the Temple once a month--Check! With the exception of May (moving and birthing a baby) we did go to a Temple every month.

Read Scriptures with intent--checkish...I think I still need to figure out a better way to study the scriptures by myself.

Establish a routine--checkish...do you know how hard it is to have a routine with a teething baby? I didn't.

Using my sewing machine--Checkity check, check! I am the most proud of this goal. I really tried hard to use my sewing machine with intention and purpose. I made 12 cloth diapers, some Christmas presents and clothes. And more I feel like I am getting better at it.

Set a family  budget--check! We have made quite a few revisions as the year has gone on, but I feel like we are getting better. We are surviving, although medical bills are always looming. I feel very blessed.

Eat healthy multicolored meals--checkish. I feel like the holidays set me back a little bit, but in general I feel like we have done fairly well. I have taken on the goal of cooking almost everything from scratch including pasta, hummus, soup stock, etc...I feel like we are taking on a more holistic cooking approach. We use ingredients in their most basic form, therefore we know exactly what is going into our food. I can't wait to have my own garden!

Blog 2 times a week--checkish. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But my intention with this goal was to keep a record similar to a journal. My blog is now more of a baby update page. Can you blame me? Lucy's face is ridiculously adorable!

Run a half marathon--fail! To be honest I don't feel terrible about this. I AM going to do one this year.  Again I didn't realize how hard this would be after giving birth. I am running right now, but it is without much purpose. In the next day or two I am going to choose a half marathon and training schedule. This leads into this years goals.

  1. Learn and practice sign language with Lucy
  2. Run a half marathon within the first 6 months of the year
  3. Continue monthly Temple attendance
  4. Study the scriptures with the intention of understanding the stories (so I can explain them to Lucy)
  5. Make a baby quilt for Lucy (a really pretty one!)
  6. Go camping/hiking several times this year (I want to enjoy the AT!)
  7. Have a date night at least 1 a month
  8. Try 12 new foods (1 each month)
  9. Make family dinners important and routine
  10. Blog frequently--and try to tell stories about the day.
I feel pretty good about this list, and somewhat intimidated.  Good thing I have these two to help me out!

In other news, this years marks ten years since I graduated from high school. That must make me old right?!

A new year

Last year was a pretty impressive year, A.K.A we had a baby. That being said, it is always exciting to start a new year where you can make new goals and record new memories. I am anticipating a lot of new adventures.

Just so you know Lucy is one crazy little girl, who prefers pulling herself up to standing over crawling, and likes to yell instead of quietly coo. She is fantastically awesome! We are so glad 2011 brought her to us.

And I couldn't resist putting this picture. Alice is such great friends with Lucy (as are Ada and Clara). The other day Alice would play the alphabet song and dance and it would make Lucy giggle. It melts my heart to see how much Alice loves her little cousin.  We love that Lucy has such wonderful family!
